April 2022: Dr. Henke explains why the reddest salmon comes from Bielefeld: Dr. Nadja Henke is featured as "Pioneer from NRW" in the first interview of a series organized by BIO.NRW. Dr. Henke initiated a spin-off from our lab aiming to produce pigments with Corynebacterium glutamicum.

On December 12, 2020, our dear friend Michael Goodin passed away suddenly. He worked as Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Kentucky and always embraced both academics and life. Michael fought for a better understanding of science by the public. He was an excellent science communicator, see his blog on public perception of science and scientists “The Green Orange Café”. We will deeply miss you, Michael.

Congratulations: Arthur Burgardt was awarded the Preis der Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie for his MSc studies and his thesis project "Metabolic engineering of Corynebacterium glutamicum for the production of Coenzyme Q10", a collaboration with Prof. Jin-Ho Lee (Kyungsung University Busan) funded by German BMBF and National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).

This summer, the C1Pro and INDIE teams were supported by international students. Anne-Laure Ricord, an ERASMUS student from Paris (France) and Rijul Bhimwal, a DAAD RISE fellow (Pennsylvania, USA) worked on a biotech process for indole. Sue Fletcher, a BSc student from Edmonton, Canada, participating in the Alberta OWL Cooperation, worked on Bacillus methanolicus biotechnology.

Nadja A. Henke and Bicomer receive Inventor Award
Inventors Dr. Nadja A. Henke, Dr. Petra Peters-Wendisch and Prof. Dr. Volker F. Wendisch have been awarded the Jörg Schwarzbich Inventor Award for their patent on coproduction of carotenoids and amino acids. The Prize has been awarded for the first time. The production concept allows for the simultaneous access to two valuable compounds with relevance for the feed industry: lysine and astaxanthin. Bicomer seeks to apply this technology for the sustainable production of lysine and astaxanthin.

Congratulations! Dr. Nadja Alina Henke and Bicomer won first prize at the pitch competition at Biocamp 2019 in Breda, the Netherlands. The competition was part of the specialized business training which was organized by BioBase4SME and held in the cloister of Bovendonk. 19 bio-based start-ups from five countries from north-western europe participated and worked for 6 days on their businesses. The final pitch competition that took place in the chapel of the cloister was evaluated by three venture capitalists. See also on Twitter.

Congratulations! Volker Wendisch received the "Distinguished Scientist Award of the International Bioprocessing Association (IBA-IFIBiop). The prize was awarded May 2nd, 2019, during the opening ceremony of 8th IBA-IFIBiop-Conference, held in Miri, Sarawak (Malaysia).

Lenny Ferrer from the #INDIE team guided 10 pupils (9th grade) from the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium (Bünde) through the laboratories of the Wendisch group. The pupils learned about work as a scientist in a biotechnology lab and about the concept of sustainable indole bioproduction.

Kerstin presented "Establishment and application of CRISPR interference to affect sporulation, hydrogen peroxide detoxification and mannitol catabolism in the methylotrophic thermophile Bacillus methanolicus" as part of the ERA-CoBioTech project C1Pro.
