15.05.2024 - New Paper by Sattler and Colleagues on the Prevalence of Legal, Prescription, and Illegal Drugs Aiming at Cognitive Enhancement

Abstract

There has been speculation about a growing demand for substances used without medical need for cognitive enhancement (CE). Thus, the prevalence rates and the identification of sociodemographic groups at risk of this behavior need further description and constant monitoring. We conducted a nationwide web-based representative sample (N = 22,101) (regarding sex, age, education, and federal state) of the general adult population in Germany. Results show a high past twelve months prevalence of consuming caffeinated drinks for CE (62.4% of respondents), followed by food supplements and home remedies (31.4%), and caffeine tablets (2.5%). The twelve-month prevalence of CE with prescription drugs was 3.7% (lifetime: 5.5%), of whom 29.1% reported using them 40 or more times; 40.5% of all respondents indicated some future intake willingness. Cannabis was the most frequently reported illegal drug for CE (past twelve months: 4.0%; lifetime: 10.7%), followed by the category amphetamine and methamphetamine (past twelve months: 1.0%; lifetime: 2.4%), and cocaine (past twelve months: 0.9; lifetime: 2.4%). We also show variation in the prevalence across multiple ascribed and achieved sociodemographic characteristics. These results can inform public policy and prevention strategies regarding the continued monitoring of the prevalence of CE and the identification of groups at risk of drug misuse.

15.05.2024 - Lesewoche/Reading Week 2024

Vom 21. bis 24. Mai 2024 findet die gemeinsame Lesewoche/Reading Week unserer und der Fakultät für Erziehungswissenschaft statt.

Ziel ist es, zusätzlichen Raum für studienbezogene Aktivitäten zu bieten, die außerhalb des regulären Curriculums liegen. Nutzen Sie diese alternative Möglichkeit der Auseinandersetzung mit Studium, Lehre und Forschung, für die im normalen Studien- und Lehrbetrieb kaum Zeit bleibt.

Es werden Veranstaltungen in speziellen Formen angeboten, wie Lesegruppen oder thematisch orientierte Diskussionsrunden. Darüber hinaus wird den Studierenden eine Liste mit Literaturhinweisen zur Verfügung gestellt.

15.05.2024 - Dr. Jule Adriaans receives Jowell-Kaase Early Career Researcher Prize

Last week, the European Social Survey (ESS) announced Jule Adriaans (AG Sauer) as the winner of the 2024 Jowell-Kaase Priz.

The prize is named after the founders of the ESS and recognizes excellence in the field of comparative social research by a promising early career researcher. Jule Adriaans was part of the team of researchers who proposed and designed a special questionnaire module on "Justice and Fairness in Europe" fielded in 29 countries in 2018/2019. Based on this unique comparative survey data, her work investigates how structural conditions at the country-level shape evaluations and reactions to fairness.

The prize will be awarded at the 5th ESS Conference taking place in Lisbon from July 8-10, 2024, where Jule Adriaans will deliver a keynote speech on the perception and evaluation of inequality in Europe.

07.05.2024 - Neuer Sammelband "Shifting Security and Power Constellations in Central Asia and the Caucasus" erschienen

In diesem Sammelband wird ein aktueller Überblick über die zeitgenössische zentral-eurasische Politik geboten, Schlüsselthemen, Trends und Transformationspfade identifiziert
sowie die konzeptionellen Grundlagen von Sicherheit und Macht analysiert. Zu den Hauptthemen gehören die autokratische Ausbreitung und Regimesicherheit in Zentralasien,
die strategische Lage in Afghanistan, Chinas veränderte Rolle in der zentralasiatischen Sicherheit, Regierungsprobleme in Kirgisistan als Rentierstaat und die destruktive
Rolle der internen Sicherheitsdienste im Kontext des demokratischen Übergangs in Armenien, E-Justiz und Cybersicherheit in Kirgisistan sowie die Politik des autoritären Neoliberalismus

06.05.2024 - Group of international researchers met for the Kick-Off Retreat of the Research Training Group "Cross-Border Labour Markets" (RTG 2951)

From April 25 to April 26 a group of 20 researchers from all world regions met for the Kick-Off Retreat of the DFG- funded Research Training Group “Cross-Border Labour Markets” in Schwelm. The involved Principal Investigators presented their theoretical perspectives on cross-border labour markets at the interface of economic sociology, migration studies and economic labour market research. Doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, funded by the RTG or associated to it, presented their research projects on the cross border labour markets of performers, physicians, Au Pairs, Russian Anti-war refugees, just to name a few. The projects focus on migration agencies, brokers, legal institutions, and migrant networks as institutions and infrastructures enabling and stabilizing cross-border labour markets. This Research Training Group is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for a period of five years.
